Lets just breathe and keep our minds open...

Its that time again ladies, oh my, lets take a deep breath, meditate and free our spirits.  Lets polish our arguments and turn them into conversations.  Lets replace attacks with facts. Lets perfect our listening skills...It is Election Season!!

So, I have been thinking alot about how women change our world.  The first thing that comes to mind is we give life to this planet.  We are also the fiercest of warriors against injustices of every kind against humans and animals.

Women have united and forced research for breast cancer and an impressive list of other diseases.  We have organized against rape, stalking, human trafficking and a whole host of other violent crimes.

Back in colonial times it was mainly the women that saw the injustice and educated slaves and thier children.  Women all over this world are risking their lives every day.  Israeli and Palestinian women are vacationing together.  They are protecting one anothers children.  Muslim womem are educating their daughters and each other.

This fills me with such inspiration and pride.  And then I wonder why, if a women has an opinion that is different from ours, a belief that we may not understand, why do we become a band of bullys?

We picketed long and hard for the right to choose yet when some women use that freedom of choice in a way we do not agree with, she is circled like prey.  She is chastised.  We call her and her children names.  We talk about her hair, her skin, and her house, nothing seems to be off limit.

Its not just a political thing either.  Women are treated this way on both sides of the aisle, all religions, races and socio economic levels.

Why do we do this?  Why do we continue to practice gang like mentality and send bi-polar messages to our daughters?

Seriously my sisters we must do better.  We will never stop bullying with bullying.  We cannot call ourselves kind if we are only kind to those who agree with us ALL the time.  We must educate ourselves on the art of dignified debate.  We must learn to be okay with agreeing to disagree.

If we are going to once and for all shatter and dispose of every sliver of glass in that ceiling we are going to have to check ourselves right now.

I would like to challenge each and every one of us to say something kind to someone we do not normally agree with.  I dare you to listen to a point of view different from your own without fear of indoctrination.  You never know this gesture may be reciprocated and your opinion will also be heard.

This political season promises to be full of drama so lets try to actually embrace our differences instead of just talking about it.  Your vote is still your vote, no one can take that from you.

One thing is for sure everyone does have a story and you never know just why some one thinks the way they think until you ask them... and then listen.

Amen Doreen and beautifully put. I have been lucky to have several FB friends whose opinions differ with my own. I have learned sometimes it is better to just let something go when you know it will produce nothing but conflict. More often than not, it opens dialogue between those with open enough minds and hearts to listen without fear and hear the other side. Always it will only produce more understanding. Thank you for your choice of subjects and pointing out to us all what we should already know.
