French women can be hard to understand. Many are happy to live in a society where chauvinism and sexism are kings.
This really is hard for me to fathom. Really, hard. They tend to regard feminism with distrust, something best left to English and Americans. Affairs are common place in France. No, that doesn't mean they're all at it. Yes, French men can be faithful, despite what most men would like you to believe. Offers are plenty though. 'Come on, an affair is good for you. It's healthy.' I'll spare you some of the other propositons I've had.
French women have no problem defending people like Polanski. 'He's an artist.' Yeah, so what?
So, when the Dominique Strauss-Khan affair emerged, it should have been no surprise that women, yes women thought he couldn't be guilty because he could afford to pay, or that it was part of the culture, or ...
Except, it did surprise me, it did shock me. I don't think I'll ever be able to hear comments like these without boiling inside.
Only two people for sure know what happened. I'm not going there. I'm not passing judgement. What I object to is the immediate outcry from men and women. French media who know say it was always well-known that he 'likes women, that some women journalists and politicians avoided being alone in the same room.'
'Nobody died,' said one minister.
'He was set up.'
'He was unlucky.'
'An imprudence, the skirt-lifting of a domestic,' said a journalist.
So, some women agree with this, make the same comments you could expect from chauvinist pigs.
Not all women though. A few days ago, a feminist movement began to speak out and is trying to raise awareness. They're getting organised. Enough is enough, they say. Quite rightly.

Thanks Ana, it's good to let it out. Been driving me crazy.
Hugs

Your words and the French women rising to the occasion will, though. Isn't it time that we stop living in the dark ages and have a little self-esteem, by standing up for ourselves and our sisters?0 points
